What is IPL Hair Removal and How does it work?

IPL hair removal is a popular method for achieving permanent hair reduction on various parts of the body. IPL stands for intense pulsed light, and it's a technology that emits broad-spectrum light onto the skin. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, and this causes damage to the follicle, which in turn inhibits hair growth.

How does IPL hair removal work?

IPL hair removal uses a handheld device that emits pulses of broad-spectrum light onto the skin. The light energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, which is called melanin. Melanin is what gives hair its color, and it is also what absorbs the light energy from the IPL device.

Once the light energy is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle, it is converted into heat energy. This heat energy targets the hair follicle, and this, in turn, inhibits hair growth. Over time, with multiple IPL treatments, the targeted hair follicles are gradually destroyed, and the hair grows back thinner and less frequently until it stops growing altogether.

Benefits of IPL hair removal

One of the main benefits of IPL hair removal is that it is a relatively painless and non-invasive method of removing unwanted hair. Unlike other hair removal methods like waxing, IPL does not involve pulling hair out of the skin, which can be a little painful and for some skin, especially with sensitive skin or dry skin this may cause skin irritation. IPL also does not require any downtime, so you can get back to your daily activities right away.

Another benefit of IPL hair removal is that it is effective on a wide range of hair colors and skin types. Unlike laser hair removal, which is most effective on people with light skin and dark hair.

How many IPL treatments do you need?

The number of IPL treatments you'll need depends on various factors, such as your skin type, hair color, and the area of the body being treated. Most people will need between six to eight IPL treatments spaced several weeks apart, to achieve optimal results.

It is also important to note that IPL hair removal is not a one-time treatment. Even after you have completed an entire course of IPL treatments, you will need occasional touch-up treatments to maintain your results. IPL hair removal is a safe, effective, and non-invasive method of achieving permanent hair reduction.

Now that you know the basics of IPL, always keep in mind to do research before visiting the salon to get laser treatment. It is still best advised to ask your aesthetician or professional involved in your treatment about your concerns, expectations, and recommendation beforehand.
